The right question is not whether an extreme heat warning feels slightly redundant when cooler weather is forecast by Sunday. The right question is what governments buy, at what cost, by keeping a warning in place for a few extra days during a record-breaking heatwave. On that math, the answer is straightforward. They buy time, attention, institutional readiness, and a margin for forecast error at very low cost. That is a good trade.
The facts here matter. An amber extreme heat warning was extended in duration. The heatwave broke previous temperature records. Cooler weather conditions are forecast to arrive by Sunday. Notice what the anti-extension case has to assume to win. It has to assume that the incremental harms of a few extra days of alerting exceed the harms of a false negative during record temperatures. That is a hard claim to sustain. An amber extreme heat warning is not martial law. It is a public signal. It helps vulnerable people check medication, hydration, travel, and care arrangements. It helps employers modify shifts. It helps hospitals and local services avoid standing down one beat too soon.
